Mark Loves Chad Lowe!

I was 16 when I had my first gay crush on Chad Lowe,
and his character Jesse McKenna on "Life Goes On"

I had a mild interest in the show "Life Goes On" when it first came on, but as soon as they introduced Jesse McKenna, I was like, "WHO IS that dreamy guy?"

It was revealed that his character was dealing with HIV/AIDS, and this made my heart break for the character, and love him even more.

Chad gave such an incredible performance. And soon
I daydreamed of being able to comfort
Jesse, embrace him, and tell him I loved him.

I was grappling with being gay and actually had a girlfriend at the time. She wondered why I was so fixated with the show. But a thousand horses would never have been able to drag it out of me, that it was because of Chad Lowe. Haha!

Jerry Loves Austin St. John!

My first gay crush was Austin St. John -
AKA Jason the Red Power Ranger from
"Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers."

I was 8-years old.

And as far as I'm concerned, there was no bigger heart-throb during my childhood than Jason, the Red Power Ranger.

I remember liking him so much that I wanted to be related to him.

That way, he could sleep over...

My parents got me a ring once, and they asked what color stone I'd like. I picked a red one so I could pretend we were together. No judgements, kids.

Seeing him in those cut-off shirts stirred feelings inside me I didn't even know I had. Or could name.

Joe Loves Jordan Knight!

The year? 1989. My age? 12. And I had something in common with every pre-pubescent girl of the day.

I was obsessed with New Kids On The Block!

And for one reason:

Jordan
Nathaniel
Marcel
Knight

Yes I am a dork and know his full name. I also know his birthday, May 17. Don't judge me.

I thought he was "cool" - but little did I know what "cool" really meant.

I loved his big brown eyes, rat tail, dance moves, his VOICE, and of course that SMILE.

Celebrity crushes have come and gone over the years. But Jordan will always be my first.
I even professed my love for him via Twitter, to no avail. Sigh.

Did I mention he's gotten better with age?

Gustavo Loves Josh Hartnett!

I had my first gay crush when I was about 10.
It was Josh Hartnett in the movie "Pearl Harbor."

At that time I don't think I even knew what being gay was.

But I did know there was something about it that made me go crazy.

Many people didn't like this movie, claiming that it was too slow or too romantic to be considered a real war movie.

As if I cared!

I asked my dad to buy it for me and he agreed.

He must have thought, "That's a war movie, the kind of movie I want my boy watching." Ha! Little did he know (or myself, for that matter) that the real reason I loved this movie was the fact that I was developing an early fixation for men in uniform.

When I finally got my hands on the DVD, I found myself watching the sex scene between Josh and Kate Beckinsale over and over again. I have never in my life been so jealous of a person, as I was of her.

I soon realized I didn't like this movie for the same reason as other boys. And to this day, I think dog tags are the sexiest accessory a man can wear.

George Loves Ricky Nelson!

My first gay crush was when I was 11, and started realizing I was attracted to men. I actually had four, all at the same time. I used to buy popular starlet magazines and save pix of them when I saw they were featured. My 4 gay crushes were:

Ricky Nelson
I watched "Ozzie & Harriet" all the time,
just to see him.

Tab Hunter
I fell in love with that cute face the first time
I saw the movie of "Damn Yankees." I met him
and even appeared on stage with him in a production of "Here Lies Jeremy Troy" years later.

Tommy Sands
He was from Houston where I grew up,
and strangely enough, I always wondered WHY he married Nancy Sinatra. Even at age 11,
that seemed out of character to me.

Troy Donahue
I fell in love with this hunk of a star when
I read in a magazine, under a column called
"Secrets Of Your Idols," that he slept naked.

Alas, Ricky and Troy are dead, and Tab and Tommy have become multi-millionaire real estate moguls. Tab declared himself gay, which is wonderful. They claim Troy was not gay, but I'm still not convinced.

Rowan Loves Mark Wahlberg!

My first gay crush was Mark Wahlberg,
when I was about 8-years old.

MTV was playing "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.

It may have been the 'bad boy' attitude, the killer body, or the song working on some sub-conscious level?

But, I got nothing but
'good vibrations' from him!

Further searching on the web revealed pictures of his days as an underwear model.

And that was the moment my feelings turned into a full blown crush.

Honestly, not much has changed since. I'm still very fond of Mr. Wahlberg, and many others. But he will always be my first gay crush.

Chuck Loves Scott Baio!

OK, so it's obvious:
Scott Baio was my first gay crush.

Well, probably not my first. My first crush was Superman when I was 5.

But that's just way too embarrassing to write about.

Scott and I were the same age when he was cast on "Happy Days." And it was love at first sight.

I immediately grew my hair like his. Unfortunately, I didn't have the matching face to go with it...

Anyway, I was such a dork, I even wrote a fan letter to the producers of "Happy Days" telling them how much better the show was with Scott.

Is there anything more gay than that?

I think my Homo Membership Card arrived in the mail that week. But did Scott ever call to thank me for getting him "Joanie Loves Chachi"? I don't think so. But, as Chachi used to say, "Wa, wa, wa!"

Joey Loves Neil Patrick Harris!

My first gay crush was Neil Patrick Harris
as "Doogie Howser, MD."

I was slightly younger than he was during the run of the show, and he was the reason I knew I was gay.

And I remember I refused to watch the episode where he lost his virginity, because he wasn't doing it with me!

LOL!

I got to meet Neil about 10 years ago while bowling with the Broadway Bowling League. He was bowling with the cast of Cabaret in the lane next to me,
and I almost had a panic attack.

Luckily, I had a friend on my team who knew him and he introduced me. And I didn't babble and I didn't fawn all over him. Nope, I played it cool and didn't even mention Doogie Howser, thankfully.

I wanted to say he was the reason I knew I was gay, but this was before he'd come out. So I didn't want to offend him. Now that he's out, I wish he knew!

Daniel Loves Cat Stevens!

The first gay crush I remember
vividly was singer Cat Stevens.

This was during the 70's, and I was about 12-years old.

I loved looking at his shaggy hair and full beard and moustache.

And bare shoulders!

This photo is from the huge poster that hung on my wall for years. I bought all his albums and listened obsessively. Being a sensitive soul, I loved his music. And I still do.

Neil Loves Johnny Crawford!

I've had more than my share of gay crushes, but my first was Johnny Crawford in "The Rifleman."

This was back in the late 50's when I was around 10-years old.

I've loved him ever since, and always will.

The only time it was embarrassing?

Explaining to my parents why I collected his records into my teens.

David Loves Tom Selleck!

I had several male crushes, but Tom Selleck was my first gay crush.

I was 9-years old when "Magnum PI" premiered.

Tom Selleck has a fantastic smile, gorgeous hair, a hairy chest, and great legs. As we have both grown older, he is still gorgeous.

At the time, I did not understand my feelings. But I knew I was enamored with him. Luckily, my big sister also had a major crush on Tom, and my dad liked private investigator shows.

So we all watched "Magnum PI" every week.

As I grew older and came out of the closet,

I realized I was attracted to men with similar physical qualities as Tom Selleck.

The first time I heard about Tom Selleck staring in "In & Out" playing a gay man, I was thrilled. One night a friend came over and we rented the movie.
I literally squealed with delight when Selleck gave Kevin Klein (another cute guy) a kiss on the mouth.

My friend looked at me oddly, but I didn’t care.
It was one of the sexiest kisses I'd ever seen!

Jason Loves Jim Palmer!

My first gay crush was baseball player Jim Palmer.

I was about 8-years old and infatuated with the Jockey underwear ads featuring him.

So much so, I cut the ads out, folded them into discreet squares, and hid them in my Ziggy pencil box.

During the summer vacation, I went to stay with my grandfather in Colorado. While on vacation, I even posed like my dear Jim Palmer for pics to send back to mom.

Of course, this was my own little secret.

At the same time I was posing, at home my mother decided to surprise me by redecorating my bedroom in an "Empire Strikes Back" theme. She pulled out all the stops: Empire wallpaper, sheets, bedspread, and a Star Wars Estes Rocket hanging from the ceiling.

The one change I wasn't so excited about, was a new "Empire Strikes Back" pencil box. The minute I saw that, my heart sank. I though for sure my mother had come across my Jim Palmer in skivvies pic stash, and I would be in trouble for sure.

It's sad to think back at the idea that I would be punished for that. But now at 40, my mother and I have a good laugh about it!
