Barbara Loves Yvette Mimieux!

I was around 10-years old, and my first gay crush
was 1960's actress Yvette Mimieux.

As the frail, emo girl in "Where The Boys Are," Yvette needed to be rescued. And I was just the one to do it.

Then on TV in 1964, she was Dr. Kildare's one true love.

As a surfer girl with epilepsy, she couldn'
t give up surfing, even though her condition made it dangerous.

That sealed my obsession with Yvette. I fantasized about saving her from fatal surfing accidents, and making her promise to only go surfing with me.

I had a relationship with another Yvette as an adult. And the theme was pretty much the same.

Kathy Loves Lindsay Wagner!

It was 1976, I was 11, and my first gay crush
was Lindsay Wagner, as TV's "The Bionic Woman"

I watched "The Six Million Dollar Man," and loved that a female bionic character was introduced.

And then she got her own show!

I was in my 20's when I FINALLY figured it out that I was gay.

And realized why I was so transfixed by Lindsay Wagner so long ago. I had a mad crush on that hot woman!

Jaime Sommers was athletic, independent, and smart.
She had speedy legs and a tennis-ball-crushing arm.
But she also had confidence and a wonderful gentleness, all wrapped up in that unpretentious, naturally beautiful face and body.

She was undeniably sexy, but didn't need to act frilly or bat her eyelashes. She was a bit of a tomboy like me, and I wanted to be like her. I even wished she could be my 6th grade school teacher.

I didn't understand my feelings back then, but even in my naive pre-pubescence, I knew my fascination with her went beyond that of my friends who also watched the show. Now I understand.

I've had more gay crushes over the years: Kate Jackson in "Charlie's Angels," Kristy McNichol in "Family," Kelly McGillis in "Top Gun," and the ubiquitous gay girl crush on Nancy McKeon in "The Facts of Life."
But it's true: we never forget our first crush.

Thinking of Lindsay still makes me smile today.
We should get together to discuss our Sleep Numbers... ;)

Karen Loves Elizabeth Montgomery!

My first gay crush was Elizabeth Montgomery.

I was age 6, and I thought she was so beautiful. But I was completely baffled by Samantha's willingness to marry dorky Darren, and to try to please him all the time.

My first feminist thought was: Why would a woman with that kind of power give it up for a man?

I also adored Samantha's mother, Endora, mostly because she constantly made fun of DarrenI can clearly remember thinking Samantha should keep her sweetness, but be powerful and exotic like Endora.

I didn't know what gay meant then, I just knew I loved Samantha. And if I married her, I'd let her be herself and use her magic.

I knew I could make her happy!

Yes, a witch pretending to be mortal just to please someone was a perfect metaphor for a lesbian growing up in the early 70's. I didn't figure that out until many years later.

By then, I understood how society worked, and would disguise my crushes by saying I wanted to be like a female character. Or that I "admired" a certain female actress. I disguised them even from myself.

But at age 6, I didn't have to lie to myself. It seemed perfectly normal wanting to marry Samantha.

Lydia Loves Sara Gilbert!

At around age 12, I started realizing I liked girls. There were a few girls I found myself attracted to, but no one did it quite like Sara Gilbert.

It started out as just a thing for her character Darlene on "Roseanne," but even now I still find myself a little attracted to her.

I caught the show mainly in re-runs, and the Darlene I fell for was was dark, moody, brooding, and wore ripped-up jeans. And I identified with her.

Later I found out that Sara Gilbert really is a lesbian, has a partner, and two children. So I'm happy for her!

And, I kinda feel like my Gaydar picked up on that, even though she was acting as someone else on TV.

Dita Loves Kellie Martin!

I had MANY girl crushes growing up:
Madonna, Debbie Gibson, and Joyce DeWitt.

But no one warmed my heart like Kellie Martin.

Her character Becca Thatcher from "Life Goes On" was sweet, awkward, nerdy, kindhearted. I wanted nothing more than to be her friend.

I identified with her frustrations and vulnerabilities dealing with school and family. I felt no one else understood her the way I did.

My crush evolved to full devotion when I got a teen magazine that featured Kellie in a bathing suit from "Wild & Crazy Kids" on Nickleodeon.

She was like a goddess.

Even drenched and wet, she looked perfect. Her smile can send my heart all a flutter to this day.

I've continued to follow her career through "Christy," "ER," and the "Mystery Woman" series. I even follow her on Twitter and Facebook.

She molded my idea of what I look for in another woman in my adult life today.

I even had an ex-girlfriend I called "My Becca" because she reminded me so much of Kellie.

Jennifer Loves Julie Andrews!

My first gay crush was Victor Grezinski of "Victor/Victoria," with Julie Andrews
in the starring role.

It was Christmas 1984, just before my 12th birthday, and my whole family watched this movie together.

I felt completely betrayed when Victor gave up her life in drag to be with a man. And I only wanted to be alone with my feelings.

Afterwards, I was in a sort of daze and obsessed with this person, indeed jealous that others might get to know her as I did. I fantasized about meeting her, and what I'd say to her. Unfortunately, I was 21 before I felt comfortable enough to explain my fascination with her!

Though many others followed, she remains my first crush.

Ann Loves Jessica Lange!

My first gay crush was Jessica Lange.

I was 12 when I first saw "Tootsie" in the theater. I was transfixed by this story of an actor (Dustin Hoffman) pretending to be a woman for a soap opera role. He developed an intense crush on his female co-worker, played by the stunning Jessica Lange.

As he was a man trapped in a woman's body, Jessica's strong negative reaction to him almost kissing her was so sad to see as a young lesbian. In the end Jessica relents, but only because he was really a man. I didn't have that luxury. And what a hard movie to watch with my mother!

But just look at her. She is so beautiful, and still my perfect image of a woman. And I identified so strongly with Tootsie, who was unable to express his love for her, because he was outwardly female.

He watched her in the mirror, his gaze full of lust and fear of discovery. Um, yep.
